Dragonball Z: Fukkatsu no F (Resurrection of F)

SO. MUCH. HYPE.

Fukkatsu no F is an animated movie released last April 2015 under Toei.  The movie is about Freeza being revived by one of his few remaining lackeys using the Earth’s own dragon balls. He then plans to exact his revenge on the Z-warriors for being beaten by a LOW-CLASS SAIYAN WRETCH, being chopped to bits by an ARROGANT INSUBORDINATE GARBAGE’S offspring, and being forced to suffer humiliation in Earth’s hell. Meanwhile, Goku and Vegeta get training from Whis, the retainer of the God of Destruction, Beerus.
THE HYPE IS REAL, the plot, however… is…meh…

Characters: 9/10

The movie brings out some new minor characters on both sides, but it’s, of course, centered on the enmity between Goku and Freeza. The more quirky parts of the movie include picking up where the original DBZ and DBZ: Battle of Gods left off, namely Goku and Vegeta training to use the Super Saiyan God Transformation, Gohan and Videl’s baby getting babysat by Piccolo, and even Krillin’s married life as a MOTORCYCLE-RIDING POLICEMAN. The already-unbelievably-strong characters like Goku, Vegeta, and Freeza get development when they realize that there’s always someone stronger and that there’s always room for improvement. Another thing to note is that ROSHI, THE TURTLE HERMIT, GETS TO FIGHT AND BE A BADASS while Yamcha is not invited.

Plot: 3/10

Freeza comes back from the dead. Fighting ensues. Freeza transforms. Goku transforms. Goku gets beaten. Goku recovers. Freeza dies. I could have put a spoiler tag but honestly, all this was put in the many teasers and trailers for the movie, and, aside from a few additions, this was basically all that the movie’s plot offered. I seriously hope Toriyama, DBZ’s creator, hasn’t completely ran out of ideas yet, especially since there’s a new DBZ series.

Music: 10/10

HYPE SONG FOR A HYPE MOVIE.
Fby Maximum the hormone, which may have been the inspiration for the title of the movie was played during key moments like Freeza’s revival. Along with fantastic animation during these moments, the song sets an awesome mood for awesome scenes. The BGM for battles and plot twists were on-point as well.

Voice-acting: 5/10

Goku’s and Gohan’s voice is annoying to listen to. Even though everyone else’s voices were perfectly adequate for their characters, having to listen to grown men screech and grunt like prepubescent boys is tough on the eardrums. It doesn’t help that they’re main characters with lots of lines either.

Animation: 10/10

MORE HYPE.
A DBZ movie requires tons of action scenes and Toei did not disappoint. The fights were FULLBLOWN fights with ACTUAL MARTIAL ARTS and yet the 3D CGs were well blended into the 2D ones and didn’t feel out of place like most 3D CGs.

Personal enjoyment: 10/10

I GOT WHAT I CAME FOR.

You don’t watch DBZ for the plot, YOU WATCH IT FOR THE FIGHTS.
It’s the anime equivalent of a Michael Bay movie BUT with LOVEABLE characters and character development.

GIVE IN TO THE HYPE.

Overall rating: 8/10
